POLLO DEL MAR: The Golden State

Ubik Live

Quicktime Video: "UBIK PG-13 Live"

Mermaid

"She was cast adrift between two worlds– one dead and one terrified of being born. Would she anesthetize herself to the burden, or rise, and bask in the illumination of life?
"

Song Notes

Imagine that you have set out across the Pacific Ocean in a straw outrigger on a quest for gold, your course carefully plotted by following the stars. One night, you are distracted by the sparkling Pleiades constellation, a star cluster that is known as a birthing ground of new suns. You revise your course, it leads you across treacherous waters to a fertile island of beautiful sirenas– Seven Sisters / Seven Seas.
***
The trick of light at sunset when the burning orange mixes with night blue is called A Flash of Green, but its also a fine John D. McDonald mystery.
***
Remember those gory driver’s education movies you saw in High School? Our favorite was Red Asphalt, and we promise to never speed again, Officer!
***
We have a fan who lives in the town of Dripping Springs, TX. We also have a fan who lives in the equally descriptive “Stillwater, OK” but we’ll save that title for the next album.
***
We have seen more than a few clubs near closing time— where the drunks have been face down on the bar so long, their eyes have moved over to one side of their face, just like a halibut. Yet, at the end of the night, they still try to pick up the drunk ladies with a peculiar stagger-dance that we call the Bottom Feeder Boogie.
***
In Philip K. Dick’s brilliant novel about, uh, everything (ubiquity that is) a product called UBIK causes items not just to decay, but to devolve, meaning that this CD would turn into a phonograph, a wax cylinder, and finally an 8-Track tape.
***
Based on the self-hating Hungarian Minor scale (no fourth!) favored by the nomadic Magyar gypsies, Magyara is dedicated to the Baron Sepy Dobronyi.
***
Did you know that amniotic fluid has the same saline content as sea water? Mare Amniotica is for the mother ocean where all life began. Edvard Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King has been a staple of the PDM set list since 1994; we hope we finally got it right.
***
As Above, So Below is a phrase suggesting consistent design structure on all levels, allowing you to feel an empathy for concepts you can’t know.
***
Inspired by the movie Apocalypse Now, The Clash wrote Charlie Don’t Surf, which has nothing at all to do with surfing and everything to do with megalomania. In memory of Joe Strummer.
